South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has underscored the profound significance of Palestinians’ right to self-determination, affirming unwavering support that resonates deeply within the hearts of his nation, according to Anadolu News Agency.

During an event convened in the Western Cape Province over the weekend, President Cyril Ramaphosa evoked the enduring legacy of South Africa’s revered statesman, Nelson Mandela, harkening back to Mandela’s indelible teachings on solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom.

“We will fly the flag of the Palestinians high and that is South Africa’s stand and South African people particularly, the African National Congress party,’’ Ramaphosa said.

He also added that “We are never going to turn back from supporting the cause of the Palestinians be sure about that,’’ he said as he sought support for his ruling party ahead of the May 29 elections.

President Cyril Ramaphosa further affirmed his nation’s endorsement of the forthcoming Freedom Flotilla, poised to deliver essential humanitarian assistance to Gaza, as the initiative progresses with its logistical arrangements.

This declaration reflects South Africa’s unwavering commitment to the principles of solidarity and compassion, as demonstrated through its proactive backing of humanitarian endeavors aimed at alleviating the plight of the Gazan population.

More than seven months into the Israeli war,  more than 34,700 Palestinians were killed and 77,700 others wounded, and vast swathes of Gaza lay in ruins, pushing 85 per cent of the enclave’s population into internal displacement besides a crippling blockade on food, clean water and medicine, according to the UN.
