Spain’s Minister for Social Rights Ione Belarra accused Israeli occupation of carrying out a “planned genocide” in Gaza following thousands of Palestinians, including hundreds of children, were killed in Israel’s ongoing aggression in Gaza.

Belarra, the leader of a prominent left-wing party, described the bombing and siege of more than 2 million population as an act of “collective punishment” that could be considered a war crime.

She called on Spanish citizens to take to the streets to urge that Madrid distance itself from the US’s unwavering support for Israel.

“Today we want to raise our voice to denounce that Israel is carrying out a planned genocide in the Gaza Strip, leaving hundreds of thousands without light, food, and water and carrying out bombings on the civilian population that are collective punishment, seriously breach international law and may be considered war crimes,” she said.

Israel gave an order for around 1 million Palestinians to flee northern Gaza for the south of the enclave with food, water, and electricity cut.

The death toll in Gaza from Israel’s ongoing bombardment has climbed to 4,137, according to Palestinian figures.

The number of injured has risen to 13,300, adding that over 1,000 others are missing.
