Palestinian Women Languish in Israeli Prisons, Experience Adverse Conditions

The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs stated Monday, August 14, 2023, that Palestinian female prisoners are subjected to continuous violations by the administration of the Israeli “Damoon” prison.

The commission’s lawyer, Hanan Al-Khatib, recounted during her visit to “Damon” prison, through the words of the Palestinian minor female prisoner, Nofouth Hammad (15) from Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood / Jerusalem, who is still in jail, about the constant harassment they are subjected to inside Israeli prisons.

Hammad said: “The situation in prison is very harsh, as the prison administration continues to impose penalties against us, deliberately deprives us of work, and continuously prevents us from visits and contacts with the family, the canteen, in addition to closing the section 13 days ago.”

She added, “Here in prison, they prevent us from taking the Tawjihi exam (high school), knowing that I am a resident of Jerusalem, and they are supposed to treat me according to the detention law for minors.”

The Israeli occupation has detained around 16,350 Palestinian women since its colonial occupation of Palestine in 1948, a Palestinian human rights advocate stated.

Moreover, the Israeli prison administration denies detained Palestinian women and girls their right to access health care by procrastinating their regular and diagnostic medical checkups and not providing medicines for injured and sick detainees.
