The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs reported on Sunday, August 6, 2023, that the Israeli occupation issued approximately 1,600 new and renewed administrative detention orders since the beginning of 2023.

The number of administrative detainees in Israeli prisons has recently surged to over 1,000, marking the highest ratio in several years, as stated in the agency’s press release.

The Israeli occupation has escalated its punitive measures against Palestinian prisoners and detainees, leading to an unprecedented rise in their numbers since the start of 2023.

The use of administrative detention as a collective punishment against Palestinians has been highlighted, disregarding international law and standards.

The Commission stressed that the policy of administrative detention aims to inflict arbitrary suffering on detainees without legal basis, all under flimsy pretexts.

Administrative detainees often face multiple extensions of their detention period, ranging from three to six months, and sometimes even years.

Administrative detention involves imprisonment without charges or trial, denying detainees and their lawyers access to evidence, a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.

Israel remains the sole entity worldwide practicing this policy.

The Israeli occupation and prison management claim that administrative detainees have “secret files” that cannot be disclosed, leaving detainees unaware of their sentencing duration or the charges against them.
