Israeli occupation navy detained four fishermen from the sea of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday, July 24, 2023.

Zakaria Bakr, the spokesperson for the Fishermen’s Committees, stated in a statement that the Israeli navy arrested four fishermen, namely the brothers Haitham, Ahmed, Jabr, and Firas Tareq Bakr.

Bakr added that the four brothers’ boat broke down at sea while they were working before the Israeli navy arrested them and seized their boat.

“The fishermen were on their boat at sea when their vessel experienced mechanical issues. During their distress, the Israeli Navy seized the boat and arrested the four brothers,” Bakr explained.

This incident is part of a series of frequent attacks by Israeli gunboats against Palestinian fishermen in the waters off the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli naval forces often impose restrictions and limitations on the fishing zone, leading to significant challenges and hardships for Palestinian fishermen who rely on fishing as their livelihood.

Since the beginning of the year until the end of June, the Israeli naval forces have arrested 15 fishermen and injured 5 others.

Moreover, they have carried out four confiscation operations of fishing equipment, according to Nizar Ayash, the head of the Palestinian Fishermen’s Syndicate.

In addition, the Israeli air, land, and sea blockade imposed since 2006 banned the Palestinian fishermen in Gaza from buying items needed to repair fishing boats. These items included motors, propellers, fiberglass, and many others.
