Egyptians gather to celebrate Al-Mawlid Al-Nabawi, which marks the birth of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. Beyond prayers, the festivities see many traditional games and folk activities. Among these is Tahteeb, a folk stick-fighting ‘dance’ that originates in an ancient Egyptian martial art. Many Muslims worldwide commemorate the birth of the prophet, with Mawlid recognised as a national holiday, while many others frown upon it or ban it altogether, as is the case in Saudi Arabia
