Colombia Unveils ‘State of Palestine’ Street in Momentous Ceremony

In Bogotá, the Colombian capital, a street was officially inaugurated with the name “Estado de Palestina or State of Palestine” during a ceremony held on Thursday, September 14, 2023.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Riyad al-Maliki, alongside municipal representative Ana Triza Pernal.

The event began with the playing of the national anthems of Palestine and Colombia, followed by a speech from Raouf al-Maliki, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to the Republic of Colombia.

He warmly welcomed this milestone and commended the municipal council and its members, particularly Ana Triza Pernal, for their diligent efforts in endorsing the decision to dedicate the street to Palestine.

Raouf al-Maliki underscored that this gesture symbolizes Colombia’s solidarity with the Palestinian people and their just cause, affirming the profound bonds between the two nations and their peoples.

Colomia’s Support

Ana Triza Pernal, the municipal representative, expressed her immense pride in renaming one of the city’s most prominent streets as the “State of Palestine.”

She also stressed that this act represents Colombia’s support for the Palestinian people, their legitimate aspirations, and their right to establish an independent Palestinian state.

The ceremony culminated with the official unveiling of the “State of Palestine” street sign by Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki and municipal representative Ana Triza Pernal.

Dignitaries at the event included Palestinian Ambassadors to the Americas and the Caribbean, the diplomatic corps accredited in Colombia, members of the Palestinian community, and Colombian advocates.

The Bogotá Municipal Council, with a resounding majority and the support of most represented political parties, approved the proposal to rename this significant street to honor the “State of Palestine.”

The proposal, a result of years of collaboration with the Embassy of the State of Palestine, underscores Colombia’s solidarity with Palestine.
